元宵節快樂 yuán xiāo jié kuài lè Happy Lantern Festival! (Lunar calendar: Jan 15th)

I hope children enjoyed the story about Lantern Festival.

We didn't make the gluten rice balls this year as children did not like them last year but instead, we have make some lanterns from the beautiful red-envelops, red spring couplets and red papers.

春聯 Spring couplets (chūn lián)

A big thanks to the Overseas Compatriot Affairs Commission in Taiwan that we were giving away some spring couplets and calendars this year for your doors and your walls.

The wording on the spring couplets were:

國 泰 民 安， 龍 騰 虎 曜

guó tài mín ān ， lóng téng hǔ yào

I found it very hard to translate these perfectly and it means to wish its country and people to have a peaceful year. The dragon and tigers are leaping and shine.

I did a quick copy of my own red paper and realised I need to sharpen my calligraphy.

Chinese Calligraphy

We had mini workshops with children for the Chinese calligraphy on strips of red papers which also used as Spring couplets 春聯 (chūn lián). This activities were well received.

I am very proud of them also that they learnt the New Year songs so quick and so well!

The word dragon 龍 （lóng) is quite unique and it is quite complex. Personally I think the traditional characters work well and look beautiful for calligraphy. I asked the children to imaging this dragon is crouching over the moon and they can be as creative as they want.

The year 2012 could also be a dragon so here're their arts!

Paper Cutting art 剪紙 jiǎn zhǐ

Older children did paper cutting art (剪紙 jiǎn
zhǐ) today. This word “春 chūn“ we were cutting means Spring. You will see a lot of 春 on red paper displayed during the period of CNY.
The papercuts are very popular as a decoration on the
windows so they are also called “窗花 chuāng huā”, it means window flowers.

The Dragon is coming! 龍年來了！ lóng nián lái le ！

We are planning some fun arts & crafts

The younger children are learning a traditional
song for the CNY called “恭喜恭喜 gōng
xǐ gōng xǐ “. You would hear this a lot during the CNY period as everyone say gōngxǐ gōng xǐ to everyone.

The older children are learning a new song for CNY called ”賀新年
hè xīn nián”.

Arts and Crafts project for Christmas 2011

Our first arts & craft activity in this term – Christmas advent calendar.

I thought it’s not only a great way for the children to learn to write dates and month of December in Chinese but also wonderful for them to recap them when counting dates down.

Children loved making stuff and this just couldn’t be better instead of those chocolate sort of advent calendar in the shop.

This cute stocking advent calendar can be hanged on the door, by the window or on the tree if you have one up early. I didn’t want to make it too long so we have 12 tiny stockings that has 1^st day to 12^th on one side, then 13^th to 24^th on the other. You take down the stockings one a day for the first 12 days (don’t throw this away just yet). You hang them all up again once 12^th was off and now you can throw them away one by one starting from 13^th. Hope you will like it!

Ireland has Halloween on 31st Oct.

Taiwan have a holiday to fete the departed spirits of the underworld : Ghost Festival, a popular occasion celebrated on the 15th July in lunar calendar.
Historically, families offer sacrifices of the newly harvested grain to departed ancestors on this day.
In Taiwan, Ghost Festival is passed by slaughtering a pig and sheep, competition on their sizes in some towns, together with a prodigious table of wine, meat and fruits on offer to ancestors and
ghosts from the underworld.

Confucius

Confucius was born on 28th Sept, 2500 years ago and he was the greatest teacher in history! Some countries in Asia have marked today 28th Sept as teacher's day. Children enjoyed watching the video of a special dance ceremony at the Confucius temple in Taipei.
They are plenty of animated short film that told great stories and words of wisdom from Confucius.
